We are analyzing images and video shared this morning that show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow. Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way. The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia. We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage. Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken. Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
