The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
